Vascular Surgery

Endovascular Procedures
Endovascular procedures are used to open a severely narrowed artery. These procedures use small punctures rather than a full incision.

A shunt is a small tube placed in the incision in the artery that temporarily redirects blood flow.

Bypass Surgery
Bypass surgery uses a graft or an artery taken from another part of your body to bypass the blocked artery and re-direct blood flow. Your doctor may suggest bypass surgery if the blocked artery is too long to be fixed with a small catheter. Bypass surgeries are most often conducted in a blocked abdominal aorta or long leg vein.

Carotid Endarterectomy
A carotid endarterectomy is a procedure to reopen the carotid artery if it has been narrowed by plaque and blood clots. During the procedure, an incision will be made in your neck and another in your carotid artery. A shunt will temporarily re-direct the blood flow. Your doctor then loosens and removes plaque from the artery wall. After the procedure is complete, your doctor removes the shunt, sutures the incision up on the artery and closes the skin around the artery.
